What Is Matter?
Matter is an open smart home connectivity standard developed through the Connectivity Standards Alliance with support from companies across the connected-home industry.
Its main purpose is interoperability. Instead of every manufacturer relying on a completely separate method of communicating with smart home platforms, Matter gives compatible products a standard way to communicate.
Matter does not replace smart home platforms, apps or voice assistants. It operates underneath them, providing a common connectivity layer so compatible devices from different manufacturers can work together more consistently.
Why Does Matter Matter for Smart Lighting?
Lighting is one of the areas where smart home fragmentation is particularly noticeable. A household might have smart bulbs from one manufacturer, switches from another, sensors from a third and a smart speaker belonging to a completely different ecosystem.
Making those products work together has traditionally involved checking compatibility lists, installing several apps or relying on manufacturer-specific integrations.
Matter aims to provide a more consistent foundation. A Matter-certified light can expose supported lighting controls to compatible Matter platforms, while features such as Multi-Admin allow the same Matter device to be added to more than one supported platform.
The result is not that every smart product suddenly becomes identical, but that consumers have more freedom to choose how compatible products are controlled and combined.
Matter, Wi-Fi & Thread Explained
Matter, Wi-Fi and Thread are often mentioned together, but they are not the same thing.
Matter defines how compatible smart devices communicate at the application level. Wi-Fi, Thread and Ethernet provide the network connections over which Matter communications can travel.
A useful way to think about it is that Matter provides the common language, while Wi-Fi, Thread or Ethernet provide the network carrying it.
Matter over Wi-Fi products connect through the home’s existing Wi-Fi network. This can be particularly practical for mains-powered products such as smart lamps, lighting controls and some switches.
Matter over Thread uses Thread, a low-power IP-based mesh networking technology designed for connected devices. Thread is particularly useful for products such as switches and sensors where efficient wireless communication and good coverage around the home are important.
Thread devices require access to a Thread Border Router, which connects the Thread network to the home’s wider IP network. A Border Router does not necessarily require another dedicated box; the function can be incorporated into compatible smart speakers, hubs, routers and access points.
Does Matter Smart Lighting Need a Hub?
Not necessarily in the traditional sense, but a Matter system does need a compatible Matter controller to commission and manage devices.
The controller may already be built into another smart home product, such as a compatible hub or smart speaker, so Matter can reduce the need for a separate manufacturer-specific lighting bridge in some installations.
Matter-over-Thread devices also require a Thread Border Router. The controller and Border Router functions can sometimes be provided by the same device. Matter-over-Wi-Fi products use the existing Wi-Fi network and therefore do not require a Thread Border Router.
When comparing products, the better question is therefore not simply “Does this need a hub?” but “What controller and network does this product require?”
Matter vs Zigbee
Zigbee has been widely used for smart lighting for many years and remains at the centre of numerous established lighting systems. Matter does not automatically make Zigbee obsolete.
The technologies work differently. Zigbee has its own wireless networking and application framework, while Matter operates over IP-based networks such as Wi-Fi, Thread and Ethernet.
Existing Zigbee lighting can also participate in a Matter ecosystem through a compatible Matter bridge. The bridge communicates with Zigbee products and presents their supported functions to the Matter ecosystem.
This means adopting Matter does not necessarily require replacing an existing collection of smart lights. Whether older products can participate depends on the equipment involved and whether the manufacturer provides a suitable bridge or update.
Can Matter Lighting Work With More Than One Smart Home Platform?
Yes. Multi-Admin is one of Matter’s core features and allows compatible Matter devices to be connected to multiple supported smart home platforms.
This can be useful where different people in the same household prefer different apps, phones or control systems while still wanting access to the same lighting.
It does not mean every feature will appear identically everywhere. Matter standardises supported device functions, while manufacturers and smart home platforms can still provide additional features through their own apps and services.
Does Matter Smart Lighting Work Without the Internet?
Local communication is an important part of Matter. Compatible Matter devices can communicate across the home’s local network rather than relying entirely on a manufacturer’s cloud service for basic operation.
Local Matter functionality can therefore continue when the external internet connection is unavailable, provided the required home network, controller and devices remain operational.
That does not make every smart lighting feature independent of the internet. Remote control from outside the home normally requires an internet-connected controller, while manufacturer-specific cloud services, some voice functions and software updates may also require an external connection.
What Does Matter Certification Mean?
The Matter logo identifies products that have completed the Connectivity Standards Alliance’s Matter certification process. For buyers, this is more meaningful than a vague claim that a product is simply “Matter compatible”.
When purchasing smart lighting, look for genuine Matter certification together with clear information about the network technology being used, any required controller and the functions supported by the product.

What Changed With Matter 1.6?
Matter continues to evolve. Matter 1.6, released in June 2026, focuses on improving device setup, multi-ecosystem experiences and control rather than simply adding another collection of product categories.
One particularly relevant development for lighting is NFC-based commissioning. Compatible devices can now support the complete commissioning exchange through NFC, providing an alternative to the Bluetooth Low Energy setup process. This could allow a compatible light bulb to be commissioned before being installed in a difficult-to-reach fitting, or an in-wall smart switch to be prepared before mains power is available.
Matter 1.6 also introduces Joint Fabric, providing another way for authorised smart home controllers to share and manage devices within a Matter environment. These developments continue Matter’s wider aim of making connected homes easier to set up and less fragmented across different ecosystems.

What Matter Does Not Tell You About a Light
Matter compatibility is useful, but it tells you relatively little about the quality of the light itself.
Two Matter-certified smart bulbs can still differ significantly in brightness, colour rendering, dimming performance, colour consistency and beam distribution. The same principle applies to smart luminaires and connected lighting controls.
When comparing Matter lighting, consider the normal principles of good lighting as well as connectivity:
Connectivity should support good lighting rather than become the design itself. A poorly positioned light with the wrong output, colour or beam angle does not become better simply because it can be controlled from an app.

What to Look for When Buying Matter Smart Lighting
Matter can simplify compatibility, but it is still worth checking the complete product specification rather than relying on a single logo.
Is Matter the Future of Smart Lighting?
Matter does not make every existing smart lighting technology redundant, and there is little reason to replace a reliable system purely because a newer connectivity standard exists.
Its significance becomes clearer when new products are added. A shared standard can give consumers greater freedom to combine products from different manufacturers and change control platforms over time without starting again with an entirely separate lighting ecosystem.
For someone beginning a smart home today, Matter support is therefore worth considering alongside the quality and functionality of the lighting itself. For an established Zigbee or manufacturer-specific system, Matter-enabled bridges and future upgrades may provide a more practical route than replacing everything.
