The Hall of Mirrors

The Hall of Mirrors (Galerie des Glaces) stands as a jewel within the opulent Palace of Versailles, a masterpiece crafted by the eminent architect Jules Hardouin-Mansart. Constructed in 1678 during the reign of Louis XIV, this iconic gallery was intended to symbolise the grandeur and power of the French monarchy. Stretching an impressive 73 meters in length, the hall is adorned with seventeen large and twenty-six small chandeliers, each meticulously crafted from crystal and solid silver.

The majestic chandeliers, suspended from the hall’s barrel-vaulted ceiling, contribute to the breathtaking visual spectacle within the Hall of Mirrors. Their exquisite design and opulent materials harmonise with the hall’s overall aesthetic, enhancing the luminous atmosphere created by the floor-to-ceiling mirrors that adorn one side of the gallery. The chandeliers, originally installed in 1770, faced a period of reconstruction in 1980.
